Shiitake is officially the world's favourite goumet mushroom! Only the humble 'button' mushroom is more popular.

With a rich smokey flavour and firm meaty texture, it is a versatile culinary ingredient - not just for oriental stir-fries.

Favouring denser hardwood logs 6 to 12 inches in diamter (15 to 30 cm), with oak, beech, chestnut, hazel, and hornmbeam being recommended. Our highly adaptable strain can easily be grown in most sheltered gardens.

    GROWING TIPS
  • log wax not needed
  • oak logs can produce mushrooms for over 5 years
  • usually first mushrooms appear around 12 to 18 months after being plugged

Plugs can be safely stored for up to 6 months. All are supplied with a use-by date.
A willow log which has been plugged 6 months ago. The white material growing in the cracks, and around the plug sites, is called mushroom mycelium-which is the mushrooms root system. This is a very good visual indication that all is progressing well and that mushrooms will soon be on their way.
