Description
Yellow Oyster mushrooms (pleurotus citripileatus), also know as Golden Oyster mushrooms resemble a bouquet of beautiful yellow flowers, and smell like freshy sliced watermelon. When sauteed in oil they have a taste similar to roasted cashew nuts. The yellow colour is lost on cooking turning into a golden brown, but beacause the mushrooms are delicate and thin-fleshed, they can be eaten raw and make a truly stunning edible garnish.
Yellow Oysters are not usually grown by the larger UK growers who supply supermarket chains. The reason is that they are very delicate compared to other Oyster mushrooms. This presents the big growers problems when it comes to packing and transportation. Also, Yellow Oyster mushroom is lower yielding so less profitable. All this adds up to Yellow Oyster being a perfect mushroom for home growing.
A warm loving mushroom species, Yellow Oyster is best grown in late Spring, Summer, through to early Autumn when the temperatures are 18 deg.C. and above.
