Information for Sealing Plugs
Wax is applied to plug sites to protect against insects, competitor molds and de-hydration. It can also be applied to the cut ends of the log to help prevent moisture loss, and it can also be used to seal any stub wounds and chainsaw slips.
Applying wax to plugs is not absolutely necessary for all our species, but it is highly recommended for the following:
25g of log sealing wax will cover 30 plugs and will also seal both cut ends of the log.
Information for Sealing in Sawdust Spawn
Sealing the sawdust spawn after inoculation is absolutely essential. Without the protective wax the sawdust spawn will dry out and it will also be vulnerable to attack by pests.
For a 1kg bag of sawdust spawn 325g of wax will seal the inoculation sites and also the cut-ends. For a 3kg bag, 1000g will be sufficient.
