Shiitake Sawdust Spawn – Hardwood Strain

Shiitake Hardwood is a classed as a ‘wide-ranging’ strain and should be used for hardwood logs and hardwood sawdust. It produces medium sized mushrooms with excellent flavour and texture. It fruits in a wide range of temperatures from 10 deg.C to 20 deg.C. making it ideal for log inoculations, where it will produce in all seasons after a 12-18 month spawn run. Grown indoors using hardwood based sawdust blocks it will produce 4 flushes when managed correctly.

Description

Shiitake Hardwood is our best Shiitake strain for outdoor log growing. As it fruits in a wide temperature range, with good log management flushes can be obtained throughout the year using the the ‘soak and strike’ system.

Most commonly available hardwood logs are suitable, with oak, hornbeam, and chestnut sustaining flushes over several years.

The ideal diameter for Shiitake logs is 12-15cm, and our sawdust spawn is perfectly suited to inoculations using our Log Inoculation Tool and Drill Bit.

The Saw Trench Method should also be considered if you are competent with a chainsaw.

This very adaptable Shiitake strain can also be grown indoors using our Beech Wood Pellets
